New car paint, is yours thin?
As the pressure to maintain sales, leads car manufacturers to make new cars more affordable, it is inevitable that cost savings are sought within the production process; combine this with modern robotic spray painting and you have a recipe for thin paint!
So how may this affect your car?
The particularly important area or layer rather, of your paintwork, is the uppermost layer known as the clear coat (note that some select paint types do not have a clear coat and the points in this article are of even greater importance to these cases). This layer is the ‘wearing layer’, its place is to protect the underlying colour (‘base coat’) from the elements, namely the sun. However, this layer is often subject to conditions which degrade it far quicker than UV exposure e.g. scratches, bird droppings, poor maintenance etc. While this layer can be remediated by way of polishing, it has a lifespan and a finite number of times it can be polished, before it requires replacing via costly respraying. The likelihood of premature paint failure, resulting in a required respray, is greatly increased when your paint is thin, because there is less material to take the daily abuse and reduced opportunity to safely polish to repair damage.
So what is the solution you ask?
Are you forced to sell your house and buy a Rolls Royce because it’s hand painted with a minimum of 5 layers? Or must you accept needing to pay for costly resprays or need to sell your car every 2 years to pass the risk on? Absolutely not!
Modern paint protective coatings provide a clearcoat-like barrier with far greater resilience to the elements and act as a sacrificial barrier. Application to new vehicles is a relatively inexpensive service, especially when compared to respraying and is a worthy investment rewarding long term. Paint protective coatings also reduce required wash maintenance – where poor technique can accelerate paint degradation and therefore should be undertaken by a trained professional (that doesn’t mean your local “happy hand wash”) or a well educated car owner.
